Ellie meets MPs: APPG highlights importance of Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All
MPs were able to meet Paralympic champion and Active Kids Ambassador Ellie Simmonds OBE at the successful launch of the Active Kids for All Party Parliamentary Group. Parliamentarians were asked to encourage schools and community groups to sign-up to Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All training in their local area.
On Wednesday 29 January, Sainsbury’s alongside the English Federation of Disability Sport held the Active Kids for All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) Launch, supported by Gerry Sutcliffe MP at the House of Commons in Westminster. The event provided an opportunity for MPs and interested partners to find out about the Active Kids for All initiative.
The day also marked the launch of Sainsbury’s tenth year of the Active Kids initiative. Through this scheme over £136 million worth of equipment and experiences have been donated to schools, groups and sports clubs nationally since 2005.
At the APPG, MPs had the opportunity to meet Active Kids Ambassador Ellie Simmonds OBE and representatives from a variety of sport, education and disability groups. In addition, speeches were made by Mike Penning MP, Minister of State for disabled people, Tim Fallowfield, Sainsbury’s Corporate Services Director and Simon Dayman, Tutor for the Active Kids for All Inclusive PE training initiative. All highlighted the ongoing commitment to Active Kids for All and helping young people lead more active lives.
Barry Horne, Chief Executive for the English Federation of Disability Sport, said:
Through the Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE training, working with our partners, we will undoubtedly improve the quality of PE provision for young disabled people in the UK. It will provide teachers with additional knowledge and skills and better equip them to deliver inclusive PE. For the young disabled people, we hope more will enjoy their early experience, be encouraged to take part and continue to be active long after their school years.
Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE training is being delivered by the four Home Country disability sport organisations and Sainsbury’s, with the support of ParalympicsGB and the Youth Sport Trust. Through the initiative, free training and resources are provided to PE teachers in mainstream schools to support them to deliver high quality PE to all young people. Since January 2013, over 1900 teachers across the UK have attended the free training courses, with an estimated 45,000 young people with special educational needs and disabilities having already benefited from the training.
Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive Community training, supported by a £1 million investment from Sport England, is being delivered through the English Federation of Disability Sport and sports coach UK. Through this programme, first step training will be provided to leaders, volunteers, coaches, assistants and parents who support community sports opportunities in England.
Since the event, exceptional support has been received from the MPs in attendance, with many seeking further information about the initiatives and promoting the programmes to schools and community groups in their constituencies.
