Deliver meaningful PE for all young people with IPE

A newly updated Inclusive PE (IPE) training course, released on the Activity Alliance Learning Hub, will empower teachers and Teaching Assistants to deliver inclusive and meaningful PE.

The course consists of ten short modules for anyone who delivers PE and school sport within education settings. The content has been redeveloped with the support of Leeds Beckett University, informed by their own insight and a working group of teachers, teaching assistants and education professionals.

There are 1.5 million disabled children in the UK, 15% of the school population. Just a quarter of them say they regularly take part in sport at school. In a recent open letter, as part of the Equal Play campaign, ParalympicsGB called on the Government to empower teachers with the right tools, understanding and resources to deliver truly inclusive PE. The newly updated IPE eLearning course is designed to do just that.

Chloe Studley, Programmes Manager (Workforce) at Activity Alliance led the project. She said:

"IPE is designed to provide a high-quality PE curriculum for all young people by increasing teachers’ knowledge and confidence to deliver inclusive PE.
"There can be a nervousness about delivering PE for disabled children, with far too many being left to watch on the sidelines as their classmates enjoy the benefits of being active.
"This course is a brilliant way to develop knowledge quickly, with handy top tips throughout. It’s a truly exciting addition to our Learning Hub, one that we hope will ensure every child gets the chance to enjoy inclusive PE throughout their school years."

The IPE course has been released to coincide with National Inclusion Week, which sees the Youth Sport Trust hold their Lead Inclusion School summit. This event brings together schools from across the country who play a leading role in championing for high quality inclusive PE for all young people.

Vicci Wells, Youth Sport Trust’s Head of Sport and Inclusion said:

"We are delighted to support the release of this Inclusive Physical Education resource. With only 1 in 4 disabled young people participating in regular physical education, this series of bitesize modules will equip educators to deliver accessible, inspiring, and meaningful PE opportunities for all young people."

Activity Alliance’s learning Hub is the go-to place for top training to ensure organisations are more inclusive for disabled people in sport and physical activity. The IPE eLearning course is one of several designed by expert teams to support people to make physical activity more inclusive for disabled people.

IPE is broken down into 10 short modules, each taking approximately 10 minutes to complete. Some of those include:

  • Why inclusion is important - You and your pupils
  • Tools to develop inclusive practice - the Activity Inclusion Model (AIM)
  • Communicating effectively
  • Youth voice
  • Delivering inclusively to your class.

Each section contains an introduction, key facts, space for self-reflection on current practice, tips on how to improve your practice and a handy additional resources page. As well as the wealth of information thought the training there is a hub with additional resources.
