Want to be active? - Here's how to find opportunities for you
With the Paralympics in full swing, you may be thinking about giving sport and physical activity a go. We have brought together some helpful places you can find more information.
There are many ways to enjoy an active lifestyle including sports for people with specific impairments, and inclusive sessions where disabled and non-disabled people can take part together.
However we know it can be difficult to find inclusive opportunities to be active. The good news is there are many organisations that can help you find out more information, including options in your local area to give sport and activity a go. From National Governing Bodies to online directories there are routes to find the information you need.
National Disability Sports Organisations (NDSOs)
The National Disability Sports Organisations (NDSOs) are a good starting point for many disabled people who want to be more active. They provide advice, support and opportunities for people of all ages with specific impairments. The seven NDSOs are: British Blind Sport, Cerebral Palsy Sport, Dwarf Sports Association UK, LimbPower, Special Olympics Great Britain, UK Deaf Sport and WheelPower.
You can find more information on our website.
Every Body Moves
Every Body Moves, a project run by ParalympicsGB in partnership with Toyota, links disabled people with inclusive opportunities to be active in their local area.
They are trying to create the UK’s biggest fun and vibrant community for players, parents and coaches to find useful hints, tips and information on what’s happening in their area. This includes in-depth listings and all the information you need to connect to local inclusive opportunities.
Find out what’s on in your area on the Every Body Moves activity finder.
National Governing Bodies
National Governing Bodies (NGBs) are organisations that govern specific sports on a national scale. They help clubs and activities to run across the country. They design and run programmes and initiatives to increase participation and many have dedicated staff to make their sports accessible and inclusive to all.
You can find a list of all National Governing Bodies on the Sport and Recreation Alliance website. Many NGBs have online searches to find a club or activity sessions.
