Young para-swimmers set to make a splash in Coventry

The next generation of para-swimmers will be in Coventry this weekend as they race at the British Junior Para Swimming Championships 2024.

This weekend’s Championships will provide a starting block for national competition for many swimmers attending. Several top world and Paralympic medallists, including Ellie Simmonds, Alice Tai and Jessica Jane Applegate, began their own success at the prestigious meet.

Organised by Activity Alliance in partnership with Swim England, it aims to increase participation and talent development opportunities for young disabled swimmers.

The two days of racing will take place at Coventry’s Alan Higgs Centre on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June. International teams will feature this year alongside young disabled swimmers from all over the UK. For some this will be their first major national competition as they line up alongside established swimmers.

Jannine Walker, Head of Events and Programmes at Activity Alliance, said:

"The British Junior Para Swimming Championships are a highlight on our calendar. We can’t wait to welcome everyone, from those attending their first competition to swimmers who will be aiming for a podium place.
"As a national charity and leading voice for disabled people in sport and physical activity it is only right that we lead the way in delivering truly inclusive events. These Championships ensure more disabled people can access more opportunities in sport and physical activity.
"We are proud to give young para-swimmers an opportunity to experience a major event and provide a pathway for those that want to go on and compete at the highest level. Our thanks go to Swim England for their support with this event."

Volunteers from United by 2022 will be on hand throughout the competition. The legacy charity for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was set up to inspire future generations following the Games in August 2022.
