About the event
Research shows that the rising cost of living and its wider impact are having a negative effect on disabled people’s activity and wellbeing.
Our latest Annual Disability and Activity Survey reported four in ten disabled people (37%) said the cost-of-living crisis has affected how active they are, versus three in ten non-disabled people (32%). Six in ten disabled people (60%) also reported that the increase in cost of living has reduced how much they socialise.
Activity Alliance is the leading voice with a vision to see fairness for disabled people in sport and activity. But we cannot achieve our vision alone. Barriers like cost of living and the related extra costs for disabled people continue to play a part in how active disabled people want to be and can be. For many, sport and activity remain a luxury and not considered a priority due to the costs involved.
This event will give insight into some of the work going on to ease the crisis in sport and activity and disabled people’s experiences. Although the content is aimed mainly at sport and activity organisations, the topic will undoubtedly attract other people from a range of sectors.
Join us for an online conversation led by Phil Friend OBE, Activity Alliance’s Vice Chair and a long-term campaigner on disability rights and inclusion. Throughout his career, Phil has spoken across the world on a wide range of disability and diversity related topics. Now retired, Phil practises his passion for debate about equality issues through podcasting. Cost of living is a very important topic close to his heart.
He will be joined by disabled people, who will share their personal experiences on how cost of living has impacted how active they are. Also, leaders from across sport and activity, including Disability Rights UK, Sported and Club Matters. These experts will outline some of the ways we can break down these barriers with helpful examples.
