500th ‘Active Kids’ teacher trained in Northern Ireland

On 28 August 2014, the 500th teacher completed the Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training in Northern Ireland. The milestone was achieved by Disability Sport NI along with staff at St. MacNissi’s Primary School, Larne.

The Sainsbury's Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Programme is an innovative UK-wide training course to provide teachers, trainee teachers and classroom assistants with the knowledge and skills needed to run inclusive PE sessions.

In 2012, Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training was launched, focussing on the development and delivery of inclusive PE training for teachers in mainstream schools across the UK. Supported by a £1 million investment from Sainsbury’s, the programme has been developed in partnership with and is delivered by Disability Sport Northern Ireland, Disability Sport Wales, Scottish Disability Sport, the English Federation of Disability Sport, alongside the Youth Sport Trust and supported by the British Paralympic Association.

Since launching the Inclusive PE training, Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive Community Training has been established, supported by £1 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England. This initiative is delivered through the English Federation of Disability Sport and sports coach UK.

Disability Sport NI is a small local charity that works to improve the quality of life for people with physical, sensory and learning impairments across Northern Ireland. They have been delighted to partner with Sainsbury’s to design and deliver this innovative training programme.

Kevin O’Neill, Chief Executive for Disability Sport Northern Ireland said:

“It has been a real boost to our charity to receive the funding from Sainsbury’s to deliver the Active Kids programme across Northern Ireland. Enabling children and young people with disabilities to get involved with and take part in a sport of their choosing has a profound impact on their confidence and self-esteem.”

Bea Cox, Store manager Sainsbury’s Carrickfergus said:

“Sainsbury’s are incredibly proud to support such a fantastic organisation which helps create opportunities for children all over Northern Ireland to get involved in sports that may not have been able to before. With the 500th teacher completing their training so close to our store we were delighted to be invited to the training session and meet the inspiration individuals involved in the initiative.”
