A night of celebration at the Cheshire and Warrington Sports Awards

The Cheshire and Warrington Sports awards were held on Friday 4 July at Tenant's Hall, Tatton Park, Cheshire. They celebrated Sport Cheshire's 25 th Anniversary as well as the the sub-regional sports awards.

The evening was a celebration of local sporting talent with over 300 guests in attendance, watching the award winners of 11 categories announced. The awards were superbly hosted by the legendary DJ Mike Shaft who kept the evening rolling along with a great sense of fun and an obvious passion for sport.

Every nominee's success was celebrated, covering a host of achievements and contributions to sport and physical activity. Our guests for the evening included Olympic medalist Beth Tweddle, the Lord Lieutenant David Briggs and Dennis Dunn chairman of Mid Cheshire Hospitals Trust.

A special thank you to the sponsors of the evening which included Matrix Fitness, Flowcrete, Livewire, Brio Leisure, Chess and MBNA who helped make the evening a wonderful success.

During the night the Disabled Sports Achiever (Jim Cochrane award) was given to an individual who shows commitment and achievement in their chosen sport. They will have shown a high level of performance and self-development. The award was presented by Chris Ratcliffe, Director of Development for the English Federation of Disability.

The nominees were:

Nathan Maguire - Wheelchair Basketball

Nathan competes in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair racing and para rowing. He has achieved success at national, regional and local competitions, including Silver at the u18's European Para Olympic Youth Sports Festival, as well as several gold medals in regional games and championships competing in wheelchair basketball and racing. Nathan is also heavily involved in volunteering and has completed leadership and coaching awards in wheelchair basketball.

John Stubbs MBE - Archery

Since 1998, John has been a member of the GB para-archery programme and is currently the longest consecutively-serving member of the team. He competes internationally in both disabled and non-disabled people's events and in world record status events throughout the UK. Amongst his achievements during the judging period he took individual and team gold at the Stoke Mandeville International Invitational, and individual Gold at the British Wheelchair Archery Association National Championships.

Lauren Whalley - Gymnastics

Lauren has been dedicated to gymnastics for over 14 years and attends The Cheshire Academy in Crewe.

She achieved five gold medals at last year's Special Olympics and is recognised for the support she offers to fellow team members.

Described as 'a real ambassador for disabled athletes' Lauren always gives 100% and has increased in confidence through her sport.
