Three Paratriathlon golds in Italy
British paratriathletes won three gold medals at the Iseo – Franciacorta ITU World Paratriathlon Event in Italy. World Champions Jane Egan, Dave Ellis and Melissa Reid all won theirevents.
Egan was a convincing winner of the PT1 category, racing with a hand-cycle and racing chair. Egan’s lead out of the swim was too much for Italian rival, Rita Cuccuru to catch.
Dave Ellis turned the tables on teammate, Chris Goodwin, who has beaten him at the last two events. Racing in the PT5 category, Goodwin, is granted a head start over Ellis by virtue of being completely blind rather than having some degree of vision.
Guided by Jack Peasgood, Ellis won by nearly a minute. Goodwin picked up an excellent silver medal, overhauling Vasyl Zakrevskyi (UKR) in the final stages of the run to beat him by elevenseconds.
Melissa Reid was a very convincing winner in the women’s PT5 category, winning by ten minutes over Zsofia Lengyel of Hungary.
British Paratriathlon Performance Manager, Jonathon Riall said:
“It was a great race for Dave and Jack, and seeing Jane and Melissa win gold was very good too. George Peasgood picked up his first ITU points finishing sixth [PT4]. He was in the joint lead coming into the second transition, demonstrating his strength on the bike. Talent Squad athletes Mark Conway [PT1] and Andy Lewis [PT2] finished fifth and sixth respectively. There were some encouraging performances.”
