Mark Fosbrook blog: 2014 Incheon World Wheelchair Basketball Championship
The 2014 Incheon World Wheelchair Basketball Championships are being held from 5-14 July in South Korea.
GB Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team are taking on the best in the world. Among the British team members is Mark Fosbrook, EFDS's Engagement Officer for the Midlands and South West.
In this, the second in a series of blogs, Mark arrives in South Korea ahead of the Championships and talks about his chance to shine on the world stage.
Blog 2: I can't believe that I am now at the World Championships!
Well we arrived in South Korea to be taken to a lovely 5 star hotel. The local surroundings are very "American" as the area we are staying in is an 'Urban experiment'.
Both competition venues are a long drive from the hotel. However, this is worth it because of the quality of both. Training the first day was at the smaller of the two venues. Although supposedly smaller, it was still a large venue. It was good to get back on court after several days off and I can't actually believe that I am now at the World Championships!
The second training day was also classification day and took place at the larger venue. As I pushed on court, I thought that in only 10 days time I could potentially be playing on this court for a gold medal and the chance to call myself a World Champion!
Anyone that knows me will know I have had numerous classification issues within other sports in the past and although we felt this wouldn't be an issue within basketball, I let previous experiences get into my head during the session. As soon as I realised this, I took myself away and refocused. I am now ready to show the world what I can do.
We then had an opening dinner which was the first time all the teams had come together again. It started to make this journey and my dream of representing my country become even more real.
I am now sat on the bus on the way to my opening game, writing this and thinking that this is my time to prove to the world that if you want something bad enough you can achieve it. I may have had many knock-backs and times when I didn't want to get back up but I did. It made me stronger and now I have achieved a lot.
Everyone has been so supportive of me on this journey from work to friends and especially my wife and son.
Let the show begin!
