British Triathlon appoint Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
British Triathlon has appointed Amie Martin as its first Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. A newly established role created to lead and drive a more equal, diverse and inclusive sport across Britain.
This new full-time staffing position will work across the national governing body to deliver greater inclusivity in swim, bike, run across all areas of under-representation and all areas of the sport; from workforce and participation to ways in which British Triathlon communicate.
Martin joined British Triathlon in November 2022 having moved from Australia where she has previous experience in developing sports integrity and safeguarding policy and strategy for sporting governing bodies as Sport and Athlete Wellbeing Consultant for Dellamarta Consulting.
A Sessional Academic at Deakin University in Undergraduate Bachelor of Business (Sport Management), Martin’s previous positions include Community Activation Manager at YMCA Victoria, Education Officer at Gymnastics Victoria and roles in social media and marketing.
Speaking after beginning her new role at British Triathlon, Amie Martin said:
"I’m really excited to be joining British Triathlon and building on the work that has already been done in embedding equality, diversity and inclusion into triathlon communities both within its workplace and across the sport.
"It has been great to feel the enthusiasm, passion and commitment from British Triathlon staff and wider community towards ensuring everyone has an opportunity to participate in swim, bike, run. There is still a lot of work to do in this space, but with the launch of the grassroots swim, bike, run programme later this year, we have an opportunity to make a real difference in communities across Britain.
"I am looking forward to working with our communities towards achieving this and understanding and addressing key barriers to participation in triathlon as well as supporting them in embedding best practice and world leading EDI strategies across Britain."
The creation of this new role is the latest step British Triathlon has taken in its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion following the development and publication of British Triathlon’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy earlier this year.
The new Head of ED&I will be responsible for leading, developing and implementing the strategy and associated action plan, as well as driving the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Alongside leading and driving forward British Triathlon’s strategic and policy approach, this new role will also work to support colleagues and partners to go further in developing and delivering solutions that make swim, bike, run more inclusive for all.
Commenting on the creation of the new role, Helen Marney, British Triathlon’s Director of Development, said:
"We have aspirational plans to grow swim, bike, run and at the centre of this is our commitment to ensuring the sport is accessible and attractive to the widest possible audience.
"We want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to have great experiences through swim, bike, run and the new Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is a really important role in driving this forward especially ahead of what will be a really exciting year for swim, bike, run in 2023.
