400 school children compete at Sussex Parallel Youth Games

School children from across Sussex came out in force for the Parallel Youth Games - a multi-sport competition event for disabled children aged 11-18 - on Wednesday 11 June 2014 at Freedom Leisure's The Triangle.

See the photos from the event.

Students from the following schools - Angmering, Downs Park, Glyne Gap, Grove Park, Hamilton Lodge, Hazel Court, Lindfield, Manor Green, Oak Grove, Patcham House, Saxon Mount, St Anthonys, St Marys, St Pauls & Woodlands Mead - participated in six sports: cricket, tennis, golf, boccia, curling & swimming. The top three schools in each event were presented with medals at an Olympic-style award ceremony.

They were cheered on by three-time Wheelchair Rugby Paralaympian Andy Barrow who provided an inspirational motivational talk, X-Factor's Lucy Spraggan, who volunteers at Hamilton Lodge School, and Brighton & Hove Albion's mascot, Gully!

Although unable to attend, Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby offered his support to the participants:

I wanted to send my very best wishes to everyone taking part in the Parallel Youth Games today. Encouragement and inspiration come from many sources and you are all an inspiration for others today.

The 2014 Parallel Youth Games was organised by Inspire Leisure, Freedom Leisure and Southern Area Disability Group and sponsored by Co-operative Membership Group, Active Sussex & Affinity Sutton. The event relies heavily on the goodwill of a large group of 'Young Leader' volunteers from Sussex schools and colleges.

More information on opportunities in the local area can be found on the Active Sussex website.
