SportsAble celebrates National Boccia Day with a Boccia Fest

The SportsAble Boccia fest has been organised as part of Boccia England's official National Day on Thursday 27th September and has been designed to attract more players into the sport.

SportsAble celebrates National Boccia Day

On Tuesday 25th of September, from 6-8pm, SportsAble is celebrating National Boccia Day by holding a Boccia Fest. During the first hour, members will enjoy some Boccia challenges and games, and the last hour will be open for anyone to come and try the sport.

Boccia is one of the fastest growing disability sports in the country and is popular with people of all ages. It is a sport that tests muscle control and accuracy because players are required to propel balls so that they land close to a target ball. Two sides can compete either as individuals, pairs or as a team of three, over a set number of ends. Each side has six balls (red or blue) each end and points are accumulated over the course of a match to find a winner.

At SportsAble, there are members who enjoy the sport at grassroots level and others, like Penny Froude, who have developed a passion and a talent which has taken them onto the national competition circuit to represent Team GB and on others who are on a talent pathway to Tokyo 2020.

Damian NG, SportsAble Sports Development Officer says:

"We really want to encourage as many people as possible to come and try Boccia for themselves. It is a sport that can be played by different age groups and abilities. Over the years, our Boccia section has grown in strength and we are delighted to offer it at a grassroots level, where people enjoy playing for fun and socialising, as well as supporting athletes who want to progress further.
"We also reach into our local community and take Boccia to groups who are unable to bring their members to our facilities at Braywick Park. It is immensely satisfying seeing people try Boccia for the first time and achieve something that they didn't think was possible."
