Tyne and Wear launches Active Disability Sport Month

The Tyne & Wear Disability Sport Forum is joining forces with a wide range of other organisations to offer taster sessions and courses in a wide range of activities including archery, wheelchair basketball, tennis and cycling. One of the first activities taking place is a multi-sport event being run by Bliss=Ability in South Tyneside for young disabled people aged 5-18 and their siblings.

David Marrin, assistant director at Tyne & Wear Sport said:

“Research has shown that seven out of ten disabled people want to do more exercise but a barrier to taking part is lack of awareness of opportunities. Therefore, we felt it was important to work with our partners and other activity providers to highlight what is on offer and use September as the month to promote all of the great work that is being done to make sport and physical activity more accessible.”

As well as the activities on offer, the Active Disability Month organisers will also carry out research to find out more about what disabled people want to do. Also, training courses to help organisations cater for and attract more people to their activities.

The organisers have created a calendar of events, listing all the activities on offer. Or find out more on social media by following #ActiveDisabilityMonth.

Tyne & Wear Sport is one of 43 County Sports Partnerships (CSPs) located across England. They are funded and supported by Sport England as well as a wide range of sub regional partners to co-ordinate activity and sports programmes in Tyne and Wear. Their overriding aim is to work together with partners to reduce inactivity by increasing the quality, range and fairness of opportunities for sport and physical activity.

They work in partnership with a wide range of partners who have an interest in reducing inactivity including councils (Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland). This includes housing associations, national governing bodies of sport, universities, colleges, health bodies, sports clubs and other sporting and voluntary organisations.
