GB Women qualify for first ever semi final at World Championships

Great Britain Women's wheelchair basketball team have made history by progressing to the semi-final stage of the 2018 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships for the first time, after recording a stunning victory over reigning Paralympic champions USA, 70-47.

The quarter-final win means GB Women have surpassed their previous highest finish of fifth at a World Championships, which they achieved four years ago in Toronto, Canada.

They will face hosts Germany in the last four at 2:45pm (BST) on Friday 24 August, with a place at the final at stake.

Following GB Women’s quarter final victory over the current Paralympic champions, GB co-captain Sophie Carrigill said:

"It was an absolutely incredible win against the USA and the team are feeling amazing. I’m so proud of everybody.
"It’s such an amazing feeling to make the first ever semi-finals of the World Championships for the women’s team.
"Going into the semis, we’re feeling very confident. We’ve played these pool games and this quarter-final so confidently and I’m really excited for what’s to come for this team."

Helen Freeman led from the front, scoring an impressive 23 points for Great Britain on their way to the highest ever finish at the tournament.

With the men beating Spain in their quarter-final match yesterday, Great Britain are the only nation left in the competition to have two teams in the semi-finals.

The women’s medal games will take place on Saturday 25 August.
