Scotland hosts Special Olympics GB 40th anniversary games
Special Olympics GB's 40th anniversary games take place between 9 - 13 August 2018 and hosted by Special Olympics Scotland in Stirling. The City will welcome over 1,200 athletes, 400 coaches and officials, 500 volunteers and attract 5,000 family members and spectators to the event from across the UK and Europe.
Special Olympics GB is the largest registered charity providing year round sports training and competition opportunities for people with intellectual (learning) disabilities in Great Britain.
A primary focus of the Games is Play Unified to promote lasting relationships between disabled and non-disabled people through joint participation on and off the field of play.
Alongside the Games, a campaign will target young people, using a “Be bold, be kind, be awesome!” message. This challenges young people’s perceptions and attitudes towards young people with intellectual (learning) disabilities, creating a more unified next generation.
All sports are split to cater for all ability levels, including exclusive lower ability competition in swimming, athletics and Multi-Activity Training Programme (MATP), enabling very low ability and athletes with multi-impairments to enjoy competing at a high-profile national games.
