Activity Alliance hosts Making Active Lives Possible Summit
On Tuesday 26 June, Activity Alliance will host its first Making Active Lives Possible Summit for leaders in sport, health and fitness at The Kia Oval in London. This unique gathering will bring together influencers, decision makers, practitioners and advocates to inspire genuine change for disabled people.
In 2018, it is no longer acceptable for the number of active disabled people and people with long-term health conditions to remain so low. Currently, disabled people are half as likely to be physically active as non-disabled people. However, our research shows that seven in ten disabled people want to be more active.
We need to understand why organisations find disabled people one of the most challenging group to engage in sport and active recreation. And, most importantly, how we change the status quo and ensure that nobody misses out on the opportunity to be more active. The Summit aims to kick start this change.
Activity Alliance Honorary President Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Vice President John Amaechi OBE, will engage attendees’ hearts and minds, alongside key speakers and panellists including: Commonwealth gold medallist, Jade Jones-Hall, British disability gymnastics champion, Natasha Coates, Mike Diaper, Executive Director for Sport England and Mike Brannan, National Lead Physical Activity for Public Health England.
The Summit has been shaped to ensure that disabled people and influencers can help to guide and motivate change together.
Barry Horne, Chief Executive for Activity Alliance said:
“We believe that for an organisation to have true success in engaging disabled people it needs to be inclusive in all that it does. This Summit will challenge key leaders and decision makers to lead sport and activity into the future with inclusive practice at the heart.
“Using robust insight, practice resources and best practice examples the Summit will provide attendees with the information, inspiration and tools to make the changes needed to make active lives possible.
"Our thanks go to all Summit contributors, especially Sport England, our supporting partner for the event.”
Through personal stories, engaging panels and interactive discussions, attendees will be part of valuable conversations and crucially, actions that ensure the number of active disabled people in England starts to rise.
