Medal rush continues for GB at World Para Athletics Championships
Hannah Cockroft and Georgina Hermitage led the charge as Great Britain finished the seventh day of action at the World Para Athletics Championships with a magnificent seven medals.
Hannah Cockroft won her third gold medal of the Championships in London, to complete the 'treble treble'. She has now won 10 world titles, to go with her five Paralympics gold medals and is undefeated at major competitions.
Cockroft stormed home in the T34 400m, in a world record time of 58.29 seconds, with fellow Brit Kare Adenegan finishing third to take the bronze. Britain's Carly Tait finished just outside the medals in fourth. Hannah said:
“These Championships have been absolutely incredible. Ten is just a number right now – it’s not really sunk in.
“I thought my time was pretty slow! I wasn’t feeling great going into the race, wasn’t really feeling like I was going to do something special, I’ve impressed myself with my time!"
Georgina Hermitage (pictured above), 28, put on a dominant display in the T37 400m to comfortably retain the crown she won two years ago. Hermitage smashed her own world record, easing home in 1:00.29 minutes, way ahead of the rest of the field. She said:
“I’m a bit shocked to go under my own world record.
“For me, it’s the pinnacle, I’m so proud to take part in the stadium. It’s not the Paralympics, but to me this is as good, if not better, because it’s home. I’m glad I managed to bag a win.”
More British medal winning performances on day seven included Kyron Duke (pictured below), who took silver in the F41 shot put with a throw of 12.28m.
Stephen Miller, a triple Paralympic Champion with titles dating back to Atlanta 1996, rolled back the years as he won bronze in the F32 club throw.
Richard Chiassaro, who battled his way to a bronze medal in the T54 400m, beating Switzerland's Marcel Hug by just 0.02 seconds. After a crash in the 800m and missing out on a podium finish in the 1500m earlier in the week, Richard was delighted to finish his Championships on a high. He said:
“After the week I’ve had, with everything that’s gone on, I’m really pleased.
“Every time I’ve raced this week, the crowd have spurred me on. The roar when you are going around is incredible – to come that close to a silver too, I’m pleased with that.”
