Junior para-swimmers go for gold in Sunderland

This weekend over 100 young hopefuls will take part in the National Junior Para-Swimming Championships 2017. Swim England is funding the event and it is organised by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS). Held at Sunderland Aquatics Centre on 24 and 25 June, the unique partnership aim is to increase opportunities and talent development for young disabled swimmers.

Swimmers taking part are aged between 10-16 year olds and from all over the UK. The National Junior Para-Swimming Championships is the first event funded by Swim England and delivered through EFDS’s events programme.

Andy Dalby-Welsh, Deputy Chief Executive for EFDS, said:

“We are extremely pleased to be organising this junior event, which we have added to our 2017 programme. For many swimmers it will be their first national competition experience. This is testament to the amount of work delivered at grassroots level to introduce new swimmers and grow participation.”

Jane Nickerson, Swim England Chief Executive, said:

“We are very pleased to be able to support this event. It is important that all our talented young swimmers have the opportunity to compete in national championships. I would like to wish all the competitors good luck and hope they enjoy competing in Sunderland.”

EFDS is a national charity that exists to make active lives possible. Established in September 1998, EFDS has a vision that disabled people are active for life. Working towards this vision, EFDS enables organisations to support disabled individuals be and stay active.

Thanks also go to Sunderland City Council, Everyone Active and SOS photocopying equipment for supporting the event.

Spectator tickets are available to buy on the door. Competition results will be available online over the weekend at www.efds.co.uk. For more information on Swim England visit www.swimming.org/swimengland. Follow the conversation with the event hashtag #JuniorSwim17
