Brit Lucy Shuker wins fourth doubles title at Bolton Tennis Tournament
Lucy Shuker remains unbeaten in Bolton, winning her fourth successive doubles title at the 2017 Bolton Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament at USN Bolton Arena on Saturday 25 February.
Lucy Shuker (pictured above) and Marjolein Buis of the Netherlands teamed up to take the women's doubles crown in Bolton on Saturday, ahead of facing off against each other in the singles final.
Shuker and Buis justified top seeding in the women’s doubles, reaching the final without dropping a set, and then beating third seeds Charlotte Famin of France and Michaela Spaanstra of the Netherlands 7-6(2), 6-3 in the final.
In the singles, World No. 5 Buis took a clear lead against second seed Shuker in both sets. Although world No. 8 Shuker retrieved a break in both sets she was unable to repeat her Grand Slam quarter-final win over Buis at last month’s Australian Open and the Dutch top seed claimed her first singles title of 2017 6-2, 6-4.
Lucy Shuker, said:
“I’m really happy with this tournament and delighted to get another title in Bolton. I had two early matches against British girls, which is always tough mentally, but I came through that, albeit it a little bit scrappily.
"In doubles, it was a long day with both our semi-final and final, but in both matches we played well; a bit scrappy again, but we came through it with some really good play.”
Stefan Olsson of Sweden made it back-to-back men’s singles titles at Bolton Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament over the weekend. Dutch second seed Sam Schroder upset top seed Shraga Weinberg to win the quad singles at the ITF 2 Series event on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, organised by the Tennis Foundation.
Olsson, playing in his first tournament since the early arrival of his first child last month, defeated Japanese third seed Takuya Miki 6-4, 6-0 in the men’s singles final. Olsson raced through the second set in 26 minutes without dropping a game to wrap up an extra special victory.
Stefan Olsson, said:
“I haven’t been practicing that much since the birth of my son, so I’m super stoked to be able to do this in Bolton. I’ve been trying out some new stuff and it’s been working really well this week and I’ve just stepped up all week. It seems like, even if I’m tired today I think I played a really solid match.”
Olsson and South Africa’s Evans Maripa later beat Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi and Maikel Scheffers of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-1 to win the men’s doubles title.
Schroder won his first quad singles title in Bolton 6-4, 6-2 against former world No. 1 Weinberg. The 17-year-old Dutchman arrived in Bolton on the back of also winning the quad singles title at the ITF 3 Preston Indoor just a few days earlier to earn his world top ten ranking debut.
Schroder and Weinberg also paired up to win the quad doubles final 6-4, 6-4, denying Antony Cotterill and James Shaw another British victory.
Alongside competition for titles and wold ranking points, the Tennis Foundation held a junior wheelchair tennis camp on the last day of competition, giving new players the chance to put into practice newly acquired skills whilst also taking inspiration from the world class players in action in the finals.
