Sainsbury's Inclusive Community Training benefits young leaders
The Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training supports SportInspired young leaders in London to deliver inclusive festivals to children in their local community.
Last November, 20 young leaders from The Warren School in London joined the 6,700 people who have attended a Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training workshop. The young leaders volunteer in their local community in wide range of roles including supporting youth football and tennis sessions, as well as being Health Champions for Change4Life. The workshop was arranged as part of the SportInspired Games programme, which introduces children to new activities and opportunities to support them to be more active in their local community.
The young leaders each had their own reasons for attending the Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training, which varied from wanting to learn new skills to hoping to make a difference to other peoples' lives.
During the three hour practical workshop and using the supporting resources, the young leaders learnt how to adapt activities to include everyone and got to create their own games. It also gave them the confidence to deliver sessions and developed their leadership, communication and teamwork skills.
Last month, they put their new skills and knowledge in to practice by delivering an inclusive festival for disabled children from the local community. As a result of the Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training, the young leaders were able to confidently adapt activities to make them enjoyable and challenging for everyone.
Following the inclusive festival, one of the young leaders said:
“I believe this training has enabled me to be a good role model to the disabled children I was supporting at the inclusive festival.”
Whilst another said the Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training made being a part of the festival “the most rewarding experience of my life”.
This was a view shared by many of the young leaders, who enjoyed helping the children to be more active and have fun taking part in sport.

“The young leaders were fantastic, you could clearly see how they benefitted from the Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training. They were really confident, pro-active, inclusive and positive.
“I would absolutely recommend this training; we are already arranging workshops in the other areas we work in.”
Overall, the Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training supported the young leaders to develop new skills and confidence in order to deliver a successful inclusive festival. The young leaders are now looking forward to applying their experience at the next SportInspired event and their volunteering in the local community.
