Future teachers reaping benefits from Sainsbury's IPE Training
So far Sainsbury's Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training has provided free training to over 9,000 teachers and school staff across the UK. The training supports them to deliver high-quality PE for all young people. Among those reaping the benefits are trainee teachers and St Mary’s University is a fantastic example of ensuring future generations of teachers are empowered with inclusion training. The students at this University will have the knowledge and confidence to include more children in their own PE lessons.
The Sainsbury's Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training is designed to improve confidence, knowledge and skill in including, challenging and progressing all pupils by embedding inclusive practice in planning, delivery and assessment.
Kath Ezzeldin, Programme Director of Undergraduate Primary Teaching at St Mary’s University, ensures her students are well versed in inclusive teaching methods. Since becoming a Sainsbury's Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training tutor in January 2013, Kath has trained over 200 of her students to effectively include and challenge all pupils in PE from their first school placement.
Kath told the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS):
“I teach undergraduate and postgraduate students, who are training to be primary school teachers, how to teach Physical Education.
“Inclusive practice is a key part of good teaching in all subjects, and as part of their core PE lectures, our students are taught how to differentiate in PE to meet the individual needs of all their learners. Some of our students elect to have enhanced training in PE and, as part of this elective, they complete the Sainsbury's Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training course.
“My students particularly enjoy the practical nature of the Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training. Through the workshop the students learn two simple inclusion strategies; the Inclusion Spectrum and STEP tool, which they can easily apply to their lessons, making them feel much more confident about teaching PE.”
One student, who recently enjoyed Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training. They told EFDS:
“This training showed me how to differentiate effectively in PE to meet the needs of all pupils, including those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND). I am now more confident in being able to include all children in my PE lessons and will strive to find engaging activities to do so.”
Another added:
“Really, Sainsbury's Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training should be at the heart of every PE lesson in school. Activities should always be adapted to the strengths and weaknesses of the class.”
