Blog: Looking back at the latest A-Z blogs
The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) website features a blog post every Friday through the year. In 2016 we’ll be taking a look at an A-Z of accessible sporting and fitness opportunities available to disabled people. This week we’re taking a look back at some of the blogs in the series so far, featuring water skiing, wheelchair dancing and extreme sports.
Water skiing – Mike Payne
The help you get from the volunteers and buddy skiers is amazing. There is always someone there to answer any questions or to make sure that you are feeling safe and confident.
There is also the social side of it that I enjoy. I have made a lot of new friends there and it is a real family environment where everyone has fun. Water skiing has improved my life so much.
Wheelchair dance – Caitlin McNiven
To rediscover dance was amazing – once I tried it in a wheelchair for the first time I knew it was right for me. But the sensation of dancing in a wheelchair was completely different to anything I had tried before.
Through wheelchair dance I have met quite a few people similar to me. And of course it improves your fitness, while it’s had a really big impact on my confidence – my self-esteem had been quite low after having to start using a wheelchair. Wheelchair dance gave me back my sparkle.
Extreme sports - Tim Farr
I guess you could call me an adrenaline junkie. I just love trying sports that challenge me and help me feel free. A lot of the sports that I do might look extreme but are actually pretty safe if done in the right way.
I’ve always liked the saying “do something that scares you every day.” Nothing puts a smile on your face and boosts your confidence like a bit of adrenaline. Once you have taken part in a sport that challenges you, or that people might have said you can’t do, then the feeling of accomplishment is fantastic. You can go on to achieve anything.
