Gerard and De Groot crowned men’s and women’s singles champions
Joachim Gerard and Diede de Groot were crowned men’s and women’s singles champions at the inaugural Bath Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament.
With the ITF 1 level event coming to the University of Bath for the first time Belgium’s Gerard enjoyed perfect preparation for the defence of his NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters title in two weeks’ time by taking the singles and doubles titles.
Gerard said:
"I am very happy to win the title here in Bath. I came out today and was just really focussed on my game and it was a great match for me.
“It is good preparation as I am heading to the Singles Masters in just under two weeks where I will be defending my title and this will give me a lot of confidence.”
In the women’s final de Groot successfully claimed her fifth ITF 1 title as she defeated Sabine Ellerbrock in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
De Groot, who won the corresponding event last year when it was held in Nottingham, said:
"To win the title here in Bath is great. Last year in Nottingham it was my first ITF 1 tournament and I’m pleased to have defended my title here in Bath. I am feeling good and looking forward to building on this at the Singles Masers in London.”
As well as the final day of UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour competition, Saturday also saw a number of local families attend the event to try tennis for themselves at a free come and try day.
