Paralympic Champion Ollie Hynd claims second gold at IPC Euros
Paralympic Champion Ollie Hynd won his second gold medal of the competition on day two of the IPC Swimming European Championships in Madeira.
The British Para-Swimming Team secured two golds, three silvers and two bronze European medals with Andrew Mullen also claiming the top spot on the podium.
Hynd reclaimed his title for the third year running with a strong performance in the SM8 200m Individual Medley.
He touched in a time of 2:25.90 to win his second gold of the meet after winning the 400m Freestyle yesterday. Hynd said:
“I’m a little bit disappointed with the time but sometimes it’s about getting in and racing as fast as you can.
"It’s special to have claimed the title again. It’s the third time in a row now that I have got that European title in that event. I’m happy with the result overall.
“I’ve got a lot of things I need to work on now going forward but it’s going to keep me motivated for the future. There are a few technical things I need to work on in that race so I’m going to go back and work on that going forward.”
Andrew Mullen took the gold in the S5 200m Freestyle as he was crowned European Champion after touching in a time of 2:42.56, and said:
“I’m pretty pleased with that swim. It’s the second fastest time I have ever gone and I am sure I can go quicker this season.
“I always love racing against a stacked field like the one tonight so to come away with another medal is great.”
Day two also saw the first relay for Great Britain and it didn’t disappoint as Hynd, Matt Wylie (S9), Josef Craig (S8) and Lewis White (S9) took to the pool for the 34 point 4x100m Freestyle Relay.
They team claimed silver in the European competition in a time of 3:53.47 and were beaten to third in the Open event by Brazil.
