Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training is the 'ideal course for non-coaches'
More than 30 attendees enjoyed two full sessions of Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training on Saturday 16 January, courtesy of Sport Nottinghamshire and a tutor from programme partner sports coach UK.
The two workshops – three-hour practical sessions complimented by online resources – were for staff working in Children, Families and Cultural Services at Nottinghamshire County Council. The specific focus was to examine using open spaces for the children with whom they work.
Mark, a manager, said of the training:
“It was a tremendous opportunity for my staff to gain skills and knowledge in being able to deliver inclusive activities to the children and young people they support. I feel the children will benefit and will have lots of fun in the future.
“The training was very enjoyable and was delivered by the tutor in a way that made you want to take part and have fun, but also listen with great interest to the theory behind the practice.”
Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training is designed to improve the skills and confidence of those who support disabled people to be more active, and is a creative and informal development opportunity.
The session, at the Dukeries Leisure Centre in Newark, was organised by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) and Sport Nottinghamshire, and delivered by an experienced tutor, Martin Mansell, from sports coach UK.
After the day’s training Martin said:
“The course worked well – everyone was engaged. The games and activities provide attendees with new concepts on how they can be more inclusive in what they do.”
And Pete Edwards, Sport Development Officer in Disability Sport for Sport Nottinghamshire, added:
“This course is ideal for non-coaches, as it gives the grounding in how to engage and introduce physical activity and sport to disabled people.
“Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training gives people the tools, knowledge and ideas on how to plan and develop a simple session. It’s a great course to develop and enhance your skills and knowledge of including disabled people in physical activity and sport, in a very practical way.”
Over 3,100 people now having benefited from the practical, informative and enjoyable workshop.
Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training is for those who support disabled people of all ages within the community, and have an opportunity to put the training into practice.
For example; carers, support workers, parents, volunteers and community groups and organisations.
Melanie, who attended the Newark training, told EFDS:
“This session was a great chance for me to gain ideas on inclusive activities which I could use and adopt where necessary with the children and young people that I work with.
“It is a fun and interactive course which gives you practical ideas to be able to adapt activities to support all children to be able to access them.”
