Bishop Auckland College win Durham County Table Cricket League Final
On Tuesday 10 November, Cerebral Palsy Sport held the Durham County Community Table Cricket League final at Emirates International Cricket Ground on Chester-le-Street in Durham. Four teams from across the county took part and it was Bishop Auckland College B team that came out on top as winners, gifting them a place at the National Finals next month.
Four teams took part in the first ever Durham County Community Table Cricket League final yesterday, GOALS from Pelton Fell, East Durham College and two teams from Bishop Auckland College. The event was a round robin tournament where all sides played each other.
Rachel Ward, National Table Cricket Officer from Cerebral Palsy Sport, the organisers of the Community League came up for the occasion and officiated the tournament as one of the umpires. Brandon Barker from Sunderland College, who has previously taken part in the Lord's Taverners National Table Cricket finals was the second umpire.
In the first round of competition, East Durham College showed how strong they were by scoring 297 and bowling out GOALs for 254. Whilst in the other match Bishop Auckland College B narrowly defeated Bishop Auckland College A, the scores being 254 against 244.
In round two, Bishop Auckland College B comfortably beat GOALs with a score of 262 and kept their opponents score to 226. East Durham College showed their strength in depth by changing two players and comfortably outscoring Bishop Auckland College A team. East Durham College 284 – Bishop Auckland College A 248.
In the third round, Bishop Auckland College A beat GOALs by 54 point, 282 to 228. In the big crunch match the two unbeaten teams played a thrilling match. Bishop Auckland College B scored 267 and East Durham held their nerves to just overtake the score and make 271.
The third place play off saw GOALs take on Bishop Auckland College A team. It was GOALs who came good in the play off, taking third place beating Auckland College A by 5, 270-265.
The final was a very close contest between East Durham College and Bishop Auckland College B team. East Durham College batted first and after a nervous start the lower order batsman managed to score heavily enough to reach 261. A similar pattern happened when Bishop Auckland College B started their innings and coming into the last over they were quite a way behind. The final batsman held his nerve and won the game by scoring a couple of 6s and a couple of 4s to make their total 270.
Well done Bishop Auckland College B team winners of the First Durham County Community Table Cricket Final. This victory secures Bishop Auckland College's place at the National Community Table Crciket League Finals at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on 6 December 2015.
