Rising star Mo Jomni reaches World Championships final

Great Britain's rising star Moatez (Mo) Jomni recognises support from national charity WheelPower, after reaching his first ever IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha last week.

Competing in a new racing wheelchair, part funded through WheelPower’s Wheel Appeal, Mo, 26 from Surrey achieved a personal best in the final of the T53 100m, placing him among the top six in the world.

Following the final, Jomni explained how the new equipment has made a difference. he said:

“The chair came in at the right time with your [WheelPower's] help. It is smoother and faster, it's my first ever custom made chair and made a huge difference speed and endurance I'm so happy. Thank you.”

Mo began his wheelchair racing career aged 24 at the famous Weir Archer Academy, set up by six-time Paralympic Champion David Weir and his coach Jenny Archer. With ambitions of winning gold medals at the highest level, he approached WheelPower for funding as the only wheelchair he was able to borrow was not suited to his impairment.

WheelPower’s Chief Executive, Martin McElhatton said:

“Sports wheelchairs can costs thousands, and WheelPower aims to help remove this financial barrier to give disabled people a fair chance to access sport at all levels from first timers to potential Paralympians."

He continues:

"Sport is a vital part of the rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injuries, and staying fit and healthy is much easier with the help of a sports wheelchair. We are delighted that our Wheel Appeal support has helped Mo to succeed at the World Championships and we wish him every all the best in the year leading to Rio 2016.”

WheelPower is committed to transforming lives through sport. They provide opportunities, facilities and equipment to enable disabled people to participate in sport and lead healthy active lives.
