New online course supports visually impaired swimmers
British Blind Sport launches new online swimming course for anyone involved with the delivery of swimming activities and sessions. The new course extends the national charity's commitment to improve opportunities for blind and partially sighted people to enjoy swimming.
British Blind Sport has been working in partnership with the Amateur Swimming Association, Active for Blind People, New College Worcester and the Institute of Swimming to develop the new interactive online course, titled i-Learn.
i-Learn is an online educational course for teachers, coaches and anyone else involved with the delivery of swimming activities. The course provides support, ideas and guidance about how to make sessions accessible people with a visual impairment. i-Learn is free to complete.
The course contains a series of interactive activities that will enable coaches, teachers, parents and carers to:
- Develop a better understanding of the needs of people with a visual impairment
- Apply their skills and knowledge to meet the needs of visually impaired people
- Understand the various classifications of visual impairment
- Identify where they can obtain further support
i-Learn follows on from British Blind Sport's VI Friendly Swimming resource. Released in 2014, this extensive resource provides information and guidance for coaches to support people with a visual impairment in and around the swimming pool. Including recommendations on making swimming sessions accessible and how to accommodate guide dogs at the leisure centre.
