UK Deaf Sport national conference set to 'reDEAFine' sport

UK Deaf Sport, the National Disability Sports Organisation (NDSO) for deaf and hard of hearing people, will host it's first national conference: ReDEAFining Deaf Sport on Friday 15 May 2015 in London.

The conference will bring together a line-up of expert speakers and contributors from the world of deaf sport to discuss the key issues and opportunities, explore innovative ideas and exchange examples of better practice with delegates.

Officially opening the conference and delivering the keynote address will be Honorary President of UK Deaf Sport, Craig Crowley MBE. A big advocate for the visibility and recognition of deaf athletes and deaf sport, Craig was instrumental in co-founding UK Deaf Sport in 2003 and served as the charity's chair until 2009.

Taking place at The Wesley hotel in London, the conference is aimed at sport development professionals and will deliver a series of presentations and workshops on the following key topics:

  • The importance of becoming DEAFinitely Inclusive.
  • How to be innovative and adapt delivery planning, marketing and communication to include deaf people.
  • Knowing your audience. Understanding research and insight about your audience to ensure the right provision is available.

UK Deaf Sport will also introduce delegates to their new community programme 'DEAFinitely Inclusive,' that supports organisations to create more inclusive opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing of all ages to play, coach and volunteer in sport.

On Saturday 16 May, UK Deaf Sport will engage with key partners at the conference, including deaf sports organisations from around the UK. The presentations and workshops will focus on how organisations can maximise their funding and investment potential, in order to provide more opportunities for deaf people to participate in sport and physical activity. Barry Horne, Chief Executive at the English Federation of Disability Sport will deliver a keynote address to delegates on Saturday.

The national conference: ReDEAFining Deaf Sport will support the charity's on-going work to improve the provision and access to sport and physical activity for deaf and hard of hearing people, enabling them to reach their full potential in sport.
