RNC Academy to host national visually impaired youth football tournament

British Blind Sport (BBS) announce that the Royal National Centre for the Blind will host the 2015 National Visually Impaired (VI) Youth 5-a-side Football Tournament.

The competition will take place on Saturday 9 May and make use of fully accessible facilities at the Academy in Hereford. The event organised and funded by BBS, which forms part of the charity's 40th year of events and celebrations; is the only specific VI youth football competition in the UK, attracting a number of blind or partially sighted young people from across the country.

The state-of-the-art sports centre is home to the England Blind Football team and is also the future host of the IBSA Blind Football European Championships in August.

Outreach and Events Officer at RNC Academy, Tim Broome, said:

'We are really pleased to be working with British Blind Sport for this event. It will be great to see young aspiring VI footballers come to our facility. We hope that this will become a regular partnership with this event.'

Team entries for the tournament and further event information will be placed on the British Blind Sport website very soon. Luke Howard from Arsenal FC, who has entered a team in previous years, commented:

'The tournament has been a fantastic opportunity for our groups. It is the highlight of the year for many of them and a talking point for months to follow. We have always found the atmosphere on the day fantastic and the sportsmanship displayed has always come before any competitiveness.'

British Blind Sport’s Participation Delivery Officer, Ross Hayward said:

'Our partnership with RNC Academy is going from strength to strength and we are very pleased to work in partnership to put on this event. The facilities provide a great setting for VI teams and individuals to enter in the tournament and gain a great experience.'
