Special Olympics Plymouth receive new 'Comic Relief Red Plaque'
Special Olympics Plymouth and District are delighted to have been awarded a 'Comic Relief Red Plaque'. They received the plaque on Wednesday 18 February, alongside 150 other projects from across the South West.
Round and red in an echo of the charity’s iconic Red Nose, the plaques aim to show how money raised by the public over the past 30 years is changing lives in towns and cities across the UK.
Special Olympics Plymouth and District received a grant of £30,000 in 2013, and is using that money to encourage people with and without intellectual disabilities to participate together in inclusive sports through weekly sports and social sessions including swimming, football and badminton.
Maureen Stockdale from Special Olympics Plymouth said:
'Everyone at the project is extremely grateful for the grant we have received from Comic Relief, it has been vital in helping us grow. We will proudly display our plaque to show our appreciation for all their support.'
The plaques recognise the vital work of local charities and volunteers across the country, and each one features a quote from one of Comic Relief’s famous supporters including Billy Connelly, Davina McCall and David Tennant. In total, more than 16,800 UK projects have received funding since Comic Relief began in 1988, and wherever you live in the UK, you are likely to be within 30 miles of a Comic Relief-funded project.
In a letter to local charities receiving the Red Plaques, Comic Relief Trustee Lenny Henry OBE said:
'One of the things that makes me most proud about being part of Comic Relief is the brilliant work that projects like yours do to help people living really tough lives here in the UK. To celebrate our partnership, we’ve created this plaque for you to display. It shows the world just how proud we are of you and lets local people know that lives are being transformed right on their doorstep.'
